President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, moved into the White House with their two dogs, German Shepherds named Champ and Major. The Bidens also have two children and seven grandchildren who will no doubt visit the White House often.

The term “first family” has come to serve as the collective name for the president along with their spouse and children and follows in the tradition of calling the president’s wife the “first lady.”

The youngest child of a president to live in the White House was Esther Cleveland — daughter of Grover Cleveland — who was born at the residence in 1893. Many recent presidents have raised young children at the White House, including Donald Trump, whose son Barron was 10 when he entered the White House; Barack Obama, whose daughters Malia and Sasha were 10 and 7, respectively, when he took office; and Bill Clinton, whose daughter, Chelsea, was 13 at the time of his inauguration.

Other presidents have moved into the White House after their children were already adults, including President-elect Joe Biden, whose son Hunter is 50 and daughter Ashley is 39. Trump had four adult children when he moved into the White House and George W. Bush was 43 when his father, George H.W. Bush, became president in 1989. When George W. Bush later entered the White House himself as president in 2001, his twin daughters were 19 and already attending college.
