State President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Tuesday presided over #WorldAIDSDay2020 commemoration and International AIDS Candle Light Memorial at Mitundu Primary School Ground in Lilongwe.In his statement, the President said his administration is committed to win the fight against HIV/AIDS and has vowed that the pandemic will be history by year 2030.He has also advised against stigma towards people living with the virus, and warned against sexual violence and abuse towards women and girls saying the vice is one of the leading causes of the spread of the virus.The event, which was under the theme “Global solidarity and shared responsibility as we remember to take action and live beyond HIV” was followed by launch of the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan which will run from 2020 to 2025.Also present were Vice President Saulos Chilima, UN Resident Coordinator, Maria Jose Torres and Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda.International AIDS Candle Light Memorial is held yearly on 17 May worldwide but was postponed to 1 December this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
