Dr Abdullahi Olokoba, Provost of the College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS) Ilorin, Kwara state, has said that plans were underway to provide hostel accommodation for students within the school premises.
Olokoba, who revealed the plan in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in his office in Ilorin, said that although the institution had provided accommodation for students some distance from the school, there was now a pressing need to locate hostels within the school premises.
“The accommodation secured for the students has good standards with good water supply, standby generator and security men guarding both male and female hostels.
“The only challenge is that most students prefer to stay in rented apartments, where they can live together with female colleagues as couples,” he said.
The provost said that there were lots of opportunities to be derived from hostels situated within the school premises, among which would be increased academic excellence, since the students would have ready access to class rooms and the library at all times, as well as reduced transport expenses to school daily.
Olokoba said that the school had prioritized the security of its students and therefore recruited capable men and women to ensure safety of their lives and property, adding that it was part of its plans to invite entrepreneurs to come and build hostels within the school premises and handover after recouping on their investments.
Reacting to the accommodation levy imposed on students of the institution which was decried by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Hajiya Saadatu Modibbo Kawu, the provost explained that the 20 percent levy was imposed payable with Acceptance fees, due to unavailability of hostels within the school premises.
He said that the school had begun refunding the accommodation fees it collected to the students as directed by the Commissioner, adding that once the fees were fully refunded a committee would be tasked with providing hostel accommodation within the school premises.
