The speaker of the House of Representatives Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the house will work with the Nigerian Bar Association and Civil society organisations to draft a new legislation that establishes a system of Independent accountability that would hold erring members of the Nigeria Police to account for their actions.
Mr Gbajabiamila stated that the legislation would also compel the Police to take responsibility for the failures of training and discipline that leads to such violations.
Speaking on the misconduct and abuse of authority by the Nigeria Police, at plenary, the speaker lamented that the actions of the police betray the people’s trust and wreak unquantifiable damage on the already frayed fabric of the society.
According to him, police reforms succeed only when such reforms have the support of the citizens.
The speaker urged Nigerians to support the house on this endeavor to achieve the vision of a Nation where the citizens trust the police to always act in the public’s best interest.
